Skift Recovery Index: Global Recovery Continues

The latest edition of the Skift Recovery Index, which provides a global overview of travel industry performance in June, shows that the global recover is continuing, with the index score now at 64 points.  This number indicates that the overall travel performance of June 2021 stands at 64% of the pre-pandemic performance in June 2019.

Mexico exceeds pre-pandemic travel

The stand-out performance came from Mexico, which has now exceeded pre-pandemic travel levels with a score of 100.1 in June. The country’s lodging sector is booming, but flight and drive segments are still falling short.

Traveler activity, which refers to travel intent and booking behavior by those living in Mexico, also remains slightly suppressed, at 80% of June 2019 levels.

The U.S. also continued to improve, registering its seventh consecutive month of growth. For June, the U.S. hotels industry fielded a particularly strong performance, with new hotel bookings for June at 112% of June 2019 levels. Occupancy was also edging towards pre-pandemic levels, at 92% of June 2019 figures.

Europe-wide growth in June

All countries in Europe monitored by the Skift Recovery Index recorded growth in June, with the continent as a whole increasing nine percentage points in June, the  most of any region. Turkey, Italy, and Germany saw very strong increases in June, while the UK’s growth was suppressed.

How Europe performs over the summer is very much a ‘wait and see’ as new cases are increasing throughout the continent and renewed restrictions are coming into place.

In total, all travel sectors recorded improvement in June, with the Skift Recovery Index reporting that the lodging segment broke through the 60% barrier, while flight performance is back to 40%.

The Skift Recovery Index is a real-time measure of where the travel industry stands in recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Index is compiled from data provided by industry leaders, including Amadeus, Duetto, OAG and Skyscanner, amongst others. Subscribe here:  research.skift.com/recovery
