Women In Tech: Ira Vouk, Senior Director of Product Management Data & Analytics

Ira Vouk joined Duetto in August 2020 as Senior Director of Product Management Data & Analytics. She has nearly two decades of experience working in hospitality, predominantly championing the role of revenue management and the use of technology to provide hoteliers with insight to improve how they lead their business strategy.

A published author and educator on revenue management, Vouk is looking forward to showing owners and operators the role technology can play in all aspects of hotel operations.

We caught up with her to find out more about her role, her experience, and her future goals.Ira Vouk

Explain what your role as Senior Director of Product Management Data & Analytics entails?

My goal is to assist our customers in gaining insights that help them make more informed decisions around their revenue management strategy.

Profitability should be the main centerpiece of the revenue management discipline and our goal is to deliver a solution that revolves around profit more than around revenue and implement all the functionality necessary for profit optimization.

Why did you decide to  join Duetto?

It was time to start a new chapter in my career. I felt like I needed a new challenge and wanted to keep disrupting and innovating because I get bored if I am idle!

I spoke to lots of people in the industry, and identified 20 companies that interested me. Duetto was number one on my list. Then I found out this position was open. It was perfect timing. 

I began having conversations with Chief Product Officer, Cheryl Chavez, and we immediately found a lot of common ground in the way we viewed how revenue strategy could evolve and how we could disrupt further.

You joined Duetto during the pandemic. How has that been? Are we living up to your expectations?

It's been a lot of fun! I didn't have the luxury to take my time and on-board for three months, but I didn't want to do that, it's not my style. I like to hit the ground running. And that's what I did. And we’ve already made a lot of progress, and have a clear vision of where we are heading.

And I love the company's culture. It's always much more enjoyable to work with people who love what they do and are talented and smart. I can't wait to meet everybody in person!

You come from a revenue management background. Tell us a little about your experience.

I started in hotel operations, actually in housekeeping, 17 years ago. Then I did front desk, sales, and accounting, and that’s where I accidentally got involved in revenue management. I instantly saw the benefit of it. To start, I was doing it manually – we didn’t have tools like Duetto back then.

I kept learning, gaining certificates, and then I started developing my own concepts and got into technology. I co-founded a revenue management company called iRates and started writing extensively about revenue, which led to me publishing “Revenue Management Made Easy, for Midscale and Limited-Service Hotels.”

I realized the industry needed more education to truly understand the real value of revenue management systems, so I started getting involved in the actual courses. I did a lot of webinars and seminars.

What has been your career highlight so far?

When I was teaching I would get these lightbulb moments. I saw sparks in my students' eyes that they were getting it. That was an excellent feeling – that my information, my education, helped them understand a lot about revenue management.

It's definitely a science, not just an art. There is specific logic and if you implement this logic in the right order properly, the results are pretty much guaranteed, and this is what revenue management systems do - they implement that logic.

And what comes next?

I've been a big promoter of revenue management solutions and technology in general in the hospitality industry because we're still behind many other industries.  

My goal is to help hoteliers understand the importance of revenue strategy and implement a successful business strategy through best-in-class RMS.
