How Curator Combines Revenue ‘Art’ With Technology

Curator Hotel & Resort Collection is helping independent hotels innovate their go-to-market strategy with a blend of industry expertise and best-in-class technology.

Founded in 2020 by Pebblebrook Hotel Trust and seven forward-thinking independent hotel operators, Curator is a distinct collection of hand-selected small brands and independent lifestyle hotels and resorts.

By coming together, this collection provides independent hotels with the power to compete on a more level playing field with bigger hotel brands, while allowing its members the freedom to retain their hotels' unique offerings.

In early 2021, Curator selected Duetto as its preferred revenue technology partner. Together, the two companies have helped bolster the fortunes of Curator’s member hotels, even in times of great market uncertainty.

“Demand patterns have changed dramatically as a result of the pandemic.  Everything from length of stay to day-of-week, business/leisure mix, group/transient mix, booking lead times and windows – everything is different than it was in the past, and it continues to evolve as markets reopen, businesses return to office (or not), remote work creates more flexibility, and international travel closes and reopens,” explained Austin Segal, Vice President, Curator Hotel & Resort Collection.

“Duetto provides hotels the ability to dial in their strategy exactly and tell the system exactly how to price and control their inventory.  Especially as we look less to history and more to the current and future, the “art” that revenue managers bring to the equation is increasingly important.  Duetto is unique in its ability to not just deploy rate recommendations, but truly arm revenue managers with automation and tools to support the execution of their ever-evolving strategies,” he added.

Duetto brings all the hotel’s revenue data into one place and combines it with competitive market data from sources such as OTA Insight and Demand360.

“This visibility in one tool makes it easier to react to changes in the market and remain competitive,” Segal commented.

Connected Tech Gives Competitive Edge

One way in which Curator is gaining a competitive edge is through the new upselling integration between Duetto and Oaky.

“Duetto recognized that it makes perfect sense that your RMS should provide pricing guidance to a dynamic upsell solution.  Independent hotels are also best positioned to take advantage of these types of innovations and developments as they do not have the layers of systems integrations or lead-time considerations that many of the brands require. That gives independent hotels like Curator’s a competitive edge,” Segal remarked.

The Duetto/Oaky integration delivers personalized, analytically powered, and highly targeted upgrade offers to guests.

  • The guest receives an Oaky pre-arrival email which directs them to a landing page to see upgrade offers.
  • The landing page delivers tailored offers to the guest, populated with dynamic rates calculated by Duetto based on check-in / check-out dates.
  • Room upgrade supplements are calculated for all available room types based on the property’s proven Duetto rate strategy and data.

A Perfect Match

There are a lot of great synergies between Curator and Duetto, and this is helping independent hotels to maximize on revenue opportunities and be creative in their approach to market.

“Duetto is a huge supporter of partnerships, innovation, and outside-of-the-box research and thinking.  Likewise, Curator is eager to shift status quos and find new ways of doing things with technology.  Duetto has proven to be an eager and open partner with us as we explore new revenue, sales, and marketing ideas and will continue to work with us as we bring different platforms and technologies together to make our member hotels stronger,” said Segal.

“More and more revenue solutions are “black boxes” where the system spits out recommendations and it is very difficult, if not impossible, to understand the rationale behind the recommendations or to change them if they don’t make sense.

“Duetto stands out among the leading revenue management platforms, striking a unique balance between sophisticated algorithms and machine learning, and unparalleled control over revenue management strategy,” Segal added.
